Breaking Pointe
Miriam Wenger-Landis
Just Right
p. 174

1) Right now in Breaking Pointe by Miriam Wenger-Landis things are going very well in Anna's dance career. My prediction from my last blog post was correct. I thought that William was going to make Anna her new favorite and he did. At the party for William and his dancers, William took Anna around to all of the professional ballet company owners and told them she was his new prodigy. Anna was given a huge role in the next performance. This is very rare for someone as young and inexperienced as Anna is in ballet. Anna has less time now to spend with her boyfriend, Ethan. Her parents are also visiting her which I think might be stressful for Anna.
2) I am really enjoying this book so far. It is the sequel to Girl in Motion, I really liked that book so I had high expectations for Breaking Pointe. Miriam Wenger-Landis was in a professional ballet company so she used her past experiences in the book which I think makes it better. Since she experienced going through a ballet theater, she knows what is realistic and unrealistic and can write a book about ballet that is believable. Since it's about ballet there can't be a lot of action or be very fast paced. However there is a lot of drama which I really like. Many of the characters are mean to each other and even try to destroy each others ballet careers. I feel this makes the plot more exciting. The characters have a lot of depth to them, they even seem like people you could meet in real life. I think the author really improved her book by making the characters seem real. I will definitely read more books by this author since I really like this one and its prequel.
3) One of the themes that stood out to me in the book so far is Power of Tradition. I think it stood out even more in the recent chapters because it is becoming more and more about the way you look in order to get parts. Ballet is a very traditional sport and ballerinas are expected to look a certain way. One way is through the execution of the elements they are required to preform. But the way that stood out to me was in the way they look. Ballerinas are expected to fit a certain body type. They must be very thin in order to work professionally. Companies sometimes put pressure on their dancers to fit the body type they are looking for. If ballet was a new idea and someone was telling people they must look a certain way and give them unhealthy ways to look that way, people would probably protest. It is because ballet is a tradition that no one pushes to change it. Its is the power of tradition that has kept ballet alive for so long. Anna, the narrator, expresses this theme a lot with how she talks about others weight.
4) Anna is my favorite character. She is a very sweet and kind to everyone around her. I really like that about her. She is a very talented dancer and is able to push through extreme pain which I think is very admirable. I think she is able to handle herself in high pressured situations, I  really like that. She works very hard for everything that has come her way, dance wise. I also think Anna is becoming less about dance and more into having a personal life. This makes her more relatable and it makes the book better.
5) My least favorite character is William. He hasn't actually done anything wrong yet but I feel like he might. He is being very kind to Anna. At first I thought this was great but now I think he might want something in return. I feel like he's going to make Anna give him something for giving her all of these good parts.
6) I think next in the book William is going to continue to give Anna good parts, for a little while longer. Then I think he will make her do something for hime in order to keep getting good parts. I also think that Ethan and Anna will continue to go out and she will put him as a higher priority than dance. I also wonder if Anna might quit dance or switch companies just because I think it would be an interesting twist.
