1. I have just finished chapter 6 in the book Hatchet by Gary Paulson. The book starts out with Brian in a plane. His parents just divorced and it's playing a big role in how he acts and thinks. Anyway he is going to northern Canada to visit his dad for the summer. But as he's flying along the pilot has a heart attack and goes unconcious. Brian tries to wake him up but the pilot dies. Now Brian is flying a plane for hours off course and is trying to find a landing. Later his fuel runs out and he plummets down towards a lake. He suvives the crash but is in the middle of nowhere. As he finds a shelter which is a cave, he looks at the supplies he has. He has some misalanious items and $20. But he finds something useful which is a hatchet his mother gave him. Brian soon finds food and water to survive. But the next thing on his list is to find out how to make a fire.
2. I think the author did a great job writing this book. One thing I havn't seen in writing before is that Brian keeps repeating these words in his head. Some are The Secret. Another is Divorce. So far all these words have to do with Brian's parents divorce so it is pretty interesting. Also I like how the book is based on surviving in the wilderness. I like the plot and I think it's very exciting to see what happens to the character.
3. The theme of this book is man vs wildnerness. It is pretty obvious because Brian is trying to survive in the wild. The wild is effecing how he thinks becuase instead of focusing on the divorce, his attention is on surviving. Also he is becoming more couragous because he needs to take risks in the wild.
4. My favorite charcter is Brian. I like Brian in many ways. One is that he is overcoming his sadness from the divorce. This is making the book better, and keeping him on track for his goal: to survive. Also Brian is optimistic. When he got his head straight after the crash, he was always looking on the bright side of thgings like what do I have, or Holw long it will take the rescue team to find me. So far Brian has been a great character but I think he will get better.
5. Although I haven't been introduced to a lot of characters my least favorite character would be the pilot. I don't like him becaue he was out of shape which gave him a heart attack. Now Brian is stuck in the wilderness becuase of him. Also Brian is afraid of drinking the lake water because the pilots body is in there.
6. I predict help will not come to save Brian. He flew the plane hundreds of miles off course so it would be hard to find him. Also I think Brian will adapt more to the enviroment and feel better. I also think he will find that the hatchet is very useful fo survival.
Dear Hank,
ReplyDeleteI also read the book Hatchet (underlined). I liked it and thought that it was a very interesting and cool book. One of the main reasons I liked it was because it didn't get too confusing because there was so little characters. I really liked your blog post. It looks like you put a lot of thought and effort into it. I agree with your thoughts on the theme of the book. I also think that a good theme is man vs. wilderness. I think this because almost the whole book is about Brian surviving and living in the wilderness. The one thing that I thought differently about when I was in the middle of the book was I predicted that after a long time he would get help. I thought this because I thought that people would start to relize he was gone and would search for him. But just because I thought this, it doesn't mean that the book ended like this because that was my though in the middle of the book.
Hi hank its Seth I just read your blog post and I thought it was really good.I have actually read Hatchet before and I really enjoyed the book. I reallyliked the plotof te book and I just really like survival stories. I thougt your blog post was really good especailly your second prompt where you talked about how you liked how Brian cept repeating words in his head. I really agree with you on your favorite character chhoice. Brian was just a really good character to follow and is really exciting. Something I disagree with was your prediction and how you said no elp will come and I would actually think help would come to save him eventually.Overall really great post hank I ad a good time reading it.
ReplyDeleteHank,
ReplyDeleteI think you did a good job on your blog post. I have had this book on my someday list for a long time but haven’t gotten around to reading it yet. Your post made the book sound interesting, I think it will be the next book I read because of your post! I think your first paragraph was the strongest. It gave me a lot of information about how the book starts, but doesn’t linger on for ages like some posts have. In addition, you left a cliffhanger at the end of it, which is good for someone who wants to read the book, like me! Your theme is defiantly a theme. It makes a lot of sense for the type of book your reading. It’s a “survivor” type book, which means man vs. wilderness would be a very good theme. I hope that theme plays a huge role in the plot to keep the book very exciting. Great job on your blog Hank!! –Seth I can tell you really liked the book when you read it from your comment. – Louis I can tell that you also found it to be a great, exciting read.
Hank,
ReplyDeleteI thought that Hatchet (italicized) was a very good book. The reason that I liked it so much was because of the survival theme. I have always been interested in survival and survival techniques. Also just as Louis had said the book wasn't very confusing because of the lack of characters. I really liked your blog post. You wrote the perfect amount of information, and described the book very well. I agree with your theme about Man vs. Wilderness. That theme made the entire book. One thing that I didn't agree with you on, is your least favorite character. It wasn't the pilots fault for having a heart attack. The pilot isn't my least favorite character but he is really the only other character in the book, so Im not sure who would be my least favorite character. - Alex, I really recommend this book to you I think that you would really like it.
