1. In the book The Death Cure, by James Dashner, Thomas, the main character is trying to survive. Thomas has just escaped from the WICKED facilaties by fighting off all of the guards and getting to a berg. A berg is a plane like contraption. In the process of the fight Thomas shoots the assistant of the man who runs WICKED ( an organization that is designed to find a cure for the flare disease). It is important to note that Thomas shot him with a launcher. A launcher is a style of gun that shoots gernades that shock you, or stun you. They don't kill you but they will hurt you for 5 minutes. Thomas along with his friends Minho and Newt fight off the guards. A third person helped them escape as well. Her name is Brenda and she works for WICKED, but doesn't like organization because they put devices in the heads of all kids which are meant to control their behavior. They all escape to Denver. Thomas and his friends need WICKED's device out of their heads. So they go to meet an old WICKED doctor to get it deactivated. Once they get to Denver, however they need to get tested to see if they have the flare, a disease that is spreading throughout the world and Denver id flare free. That means Newt cannot go into Denver because he has the flare. After Thomas and Minho get the machines disabled by the doctor, they all go to a coffee shop where they notice that someone has the flare. Thomas gets arrested for seeing that the man had it and not telling the police officer, but out of nowhere, Assistant Jansen shoots the cop right before thomas is going to get taken to the station.
2. I really like this book more than the previous books in the series because it has so much more detail. Every little thing in this book is explained very well and makes a lot of sense. Especially when they were in WICKED trying to get out. Every fight and hit man was described in great detail. Also, when they entered Denver, the description of the city was good considering Thomas and Minho have never seen a city. Then Thomas getting arrested was well detailed because the author explained when the cop put the substance on the man's head.
3. The theme in this book is revenge. I think this because Thomas and his freinds want to know the truth but also know if they got their memories back, they feared they would have memories made by WICKED. They also want to get back at WICKED for what they have done to them and to their friends. All of the kids who were in the trials were upset and mad that they had no memory of their past life right away, they were in this maze, and that they didn't know anyone. That really made them upset. Especially in the first book how out of nowhere a girl comes in a day after Thomas does and they are all surprised but soon they all get very mad because WICKED is setting them up to die by cutting off everything. They lose all food and supplies. I wonder what will happen next considering Thomas was just saved by WICKED.
4. My favorite character by far is Thomas. Not only is he the main protagonist but his character is so interesting. He is always caught up in the action but I like how he is put through mental challenges. one example is in the beginning of the book he is put in a white cell for a long time without a way out and no bed or new clothes or shower. He is put through the most challenges both mental and physical in the book. I also like him because he has the most relationships in the book with the other people. The people in this book either like Thomas, love him, or he just decides to not like them that much. But they still like him. I think Thomas is a nice, awesome character.
5. My least favorite character is assistant Janson or "Rat Man". I don't like him because he is a manipulator of the kid's minds. He works for WICKED, and because of that he is in control of their minds. He can make them do things if their minds are still controlled. Thomas had his device deactivated so he is in control of his mind. Janson also never is that nice in the book. He is always so serious, never wanting to have fun or do anything to help that much. He claims that Thomas approved him to be the assistant to which made me think is Thomas the Leader of WICKED? Janson also wants to hurt the kids so I don't like his liking of death, just for research.
6. I think that later in this book Thomas is going to have to find his friends, and they will help the right arm in defeating WICKED. Then they will all run away and live to fight another day. In between that though, there are going to be lots of fighting and wars will break out, and I think Newt will die from the Flare. Then everyone will get upset and the ending will be a sad one. I hope Thomas lives, and I hope he gets back together with Teresa after what happened. I don't think that Teresa and Aris had a thing. I think it was WICKED manipulating them. I think it was a test. They all are tests. I hope that they all do what they have to do to get away from WICKED and live without them. I cant wait to read the prequel. I think it will really clear things up overall.
Excellent Job!!! Blog of the Week!!! :) Ms. D
ReplyDeleteDear Oliver,
ReplyDeleteI have not read this book but I did read The Maze Runner (italicized). This book is on my "Someday List". I really liked your blog post! I especially liked your theme paragraph about revenge because that was a theme that was not very present in The Maze Runner (italicized). I also really liked Thomas in the book and it sounds like his character has remained consistent from the first novel. If anything, it sounds like he is an even stronger character!
What I especially like about your theme paragraph is now that they are out of the maze, they are able to actually act on the revenge that they felt during The Maze Runner (italicized). I think you proved that really well!
Your post really made me want to read the book. Thanks!
Sincerely,
Monster Duryea
Dear Oliver,
ReplyDeleteAs I have already read the series I still agree with you on how the theme is revenge. After all that WICKED has done to the Gladers I can understand why you would pick that theme. Also revenge is important because it changes the characters emotions and actions, which makes the book really good. One thing that I disagree with though is I thought the first book was the best even though you didn't know all about WICKED. The reason I liked the first book is because it was simple because you did't know all the background info (WICKED) and the story was exciting overall, like trying to get out of the maze and Thomas and Teresa not hating each other. Even though the Death Cure (italicized) wasn't the best book it was still a really good book, I mean it's really hard to beast the Maze Runner (italicized). Also this book answered a lot of questions from the previous books, and was just as intensifying as the first book with action and what not. I thought your blog post was very good which is probably why it won blogger of the week! I think I would have wrote the exact thing as a you did, except my favorite character(s) where the cranks. They changed a lot in the book which you will soon find out. I also agree with Monster Duryea's post about the theme revenge not being present in the maze runner but it was present in the Death Cure (both titles italicized). Good job on your blog post Oliver and I can't wait till you finish the book.
Sincerely,
Hank
