1.I just finished the book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. The ending of the book was a very sad one. In the ending of this book you find out that Lennie has killed Curly's wife. George knows that enough is enough and goes to find him. He knows where he is because in the beginning of the book George tells Lennie to go to a special place when he got in trouble. So when everyone on the farm finds out about what happens they all go after Lennie. George steals Carlson's gun and shoots Lennie. First he reassures Lennie about their farm and the land but then he kills him. After, George walks off with Slim to another farm, and to live another day.
2. This book had a lot of detail. There was never a point when you didn't know what was going on in the story. Steinbeck did a good job of using detail to get the reader to understand the book. There was a lot of explaining to do in this story because many things happen in a very short amount of time. How would you have known about Lennie's mental disabilities without further explanation? His mental disabilities makes him slow in the brain so it is harder to think for him. This comes to play because later in the story Lennie is feeling Curley's wife's hair and when she starts screaming, he immediately puts his hand over her mouth. He then breaks her windpipe and she dies. Steinbeck also explained very clearly about how Lennie has a history of killing things. For example when Lennie finds a mouse and pets it. It then bites his fingers and he squeezes its brain until it dies. Steinbeck also explains how George saves Lennie from bad situations and takes care of him because Lennie can't do it himself.
3.The theme in this book is Loneliness. I think this is the theme because in the book a lot of people are lonely. For example in the book there is a character named Crooks. Crooks is a black man and a cripple. Just because he is black he cannot go into the bunkhouse at the ranch, and has to live in the barn. His room is not that nice and he lives right behind the horses, so there is manure outside hi window. Another person who is lonely is Curley's wife. She isn't treated the same. In a way she is like Crooks. She isn't talked to that much because everyone knows that she is Curley's. No one wants to mess with her. Also in the book she has a scene where she is talking to Lennie and she talks about how she is lonely.
4. My favorite character in this book is George. He is my favorite character because he is noble. He always has an idea on how to get out of the trouble. He saves Lennie multiple times. In this book Lennie is the character that gets in the most trouble. The reason is mostly because Lennie has a mental problem and because of that he doesn't know what to do in uncomfortable situations. Also George takes care of Lennie and I like how he makes sure Lennie's needs are satisfied before his.
5. My least favorite character in the book is Curley. He is my least favorite character because he is always getting people into trouble. He does this because he is small and wants everyone to know he is important. He also is a mean person. I don't like people who are mean, especially to women. You find out that he is mean to women because in the book his wife says that he doesn't love her and he is mean. Curley also makes her feel lonely. I think Curley should except he is little and he isn't going to get bigger. He is also mean because he is insecure.
6. I thought that the ending of the book was going to be a lot different. I thought this until someone told me the ending and ruined it for me. Overall though it was a sad ending. Steinbeck gave a lot of detail in this book to foreshadow the ending. The clues that were given were about Lennie at the Weed. The Weed is the ranch that George and Lennie came from. Lennie grabbed a women's dress that makes them have to escape to leave.

Hey Oliver,
ReplyDeleteI really liked your blog post! It was very detailed and thoughtful. You definitely deserved blogger of the week! This book wasn't one of my favorites, but I thought it was a good type of book to try out. Steinbeck used a lot of detail in his book, and described each event thoroughly.
I agree with you that the ending was sad. George had such a strong heart to be able to keep everyone safe and end Lennie's life. It was a hard, sad decision, but it was one that had to be made. I don't disagree with you for anything! You did make me consider that Curley's wife and Crooks are similar, though. I always knew that they represented loneliness, but I never noticed their similarities until I read your blog post. They both are left out and forgotten about.
Keep up the good work!
